Welcome to our March 2022 Pānui

Heria te taura tangata.

Weave the people.

As we learn to live in Phase Three of Red Level, with Omicron cases on the rise in our communities, we remind all to be safe and to follow the guidelines put out by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Social Development.

Despite whatever choices are made about vaccinations and vaccination certificates, our goal is to support and ensure whānau have the kai needed during these challenging times. Responses will vary between regions so please seek out your local advice from your local Council, DHB & Regional Public Health or local MSD commissioner.

Please refer the latest guidance for your safety and wellbeing or the Food Secure Communities updated resources.

Independent Aotearoa Food Systems Dialogues

A group supported by the NZ Food Waste Champions 12.3, AgRESTORE, Dietitians NZ and Nickie Hursthouse geared up for their first 2022 food systems dialogue early March. As a collective, the intent is to keep working on achieving responsible production and consumption with a focus on reducing [food access] inequality.

They will continue to lead a series of discussions from breakout tables and deep dives into Food Waste, Better Nutrition, Food Sovereignty, Composting and Monitoring, as well as keep informed of other sector movement to ensure they are also supporting those instigating change.

You can learn more about other discussions and dialogue being led by The Aotearoa Circle – Mana Kai Initiative here.

Onboarding the Standard Food Parcel Measure

Following the launch of the Aotearoa Standard Food Parcel Measure last year (July 2021), Kore Hiakai invite foodbanks and community food distributors to use this measuring tool by calculating the number of [Standard] Food Parcels their organisation distributes against the measure. The primary driver for the measure is to quantify the volume of food being distributed via Food Parcels.

We are willing to work alongside you to figure out how this can be used in your organisation, or to talk through any queries you may have. Please reach out to learn more by contacting tammie.korehiakai@nzccss.org.nz
